FROM LIVELY NAPLES TO THE PUGLIAN COUNTRYSIDE
Veer off the tourist track as we explore vibrant Southern Italy and discover an enchanting ancient culture untouched by mass tourism. Make Neapolitan pizza with a local chef; sail to hidden thermal islands; wander the radiant streets of Baroque Lecce, the “Florence of the South”; admire the greatest ancient Roman sculptures; harvest olives and taste the freshest oil at a local press; shop in colorful local markets; marvel at 1,000 year old Byzantine frescoes; and enjoy unforgettable accommodations in a former Franciscan monastery, a Puglian countryside farm, exquisitely remodeled Stone Age caves. Day 1 and 2 - Depart USA, Arrive Italy
Arrive Naples and transfer to our hotel located in a former Franciscan monastery with stunning views of Naples and Vesuvius from every room. Enjoy a grand dinner on the expansive roof garden. (D)
Day 3 - Explore Naples
Enjoy colorful Naples as we see streetside markets, enjoy Neapolitan coffee and baba, marvel at the Veiled Christ statue in the Cappella Sansevero, and tour marvelous Baroque churches. Take a traditional pizza making class for lunch and an optional visit to the Naples Archaeological Museum (that houses the amazing finds from Pompeii) before enjoying a grand seafood dinner at the waterside Castel dell’Ovo. Day 4 - Archaeology Visit
In the morning we begin with our welcome meeting and a cultural orientation to life in Greece. We then explore the picturesque town of Nafplio, including the square where Greece declared its independence from the Ottoman Empire, before exploring the expansive ruins of the Venetian-built Palamidi Fortress, high above Nafplio. We then continue to the ancient healing center of Epidavros as we learn about medicine in ancient Greece. We use the opportunity in the adjoining, magnificent theater of Epidavros, the best preserved from ancient Greece, to explore Greek drama and comedy in its original setting. In the evening, we gather by the harbor for a festive dinner accompanied by local musicians as we learn about Greek folk music and how to do traditional Greek dances. (B,L,D)
Day 5 - Boat ride to Ischia and Procida
Board a private boat and set off into the Gulf of Naples. We’ll come upon the stunning port of the small, colorful island of Procida. We’ll enjoy a seafood lunch with a view of the sea and the pastel buildings trickling down the hillside. Next we’ll said to the famous island of Ischia and relax in the natural thermal springs or shop in the quaint beach town. After a memorable day of Italian island hopping, we’ll return to our comfortable hotel in Naples for dinner on your own. (B,L)
2 nights in matera

Day 6 - Buffalo Mozzarella Factory, Arrive Matera
We’ll depart Naples in the morning in order to arrive at the farm of Filippo Morese who, after 9 generations over three centuries, continues his family tradition by raising a herd of 600 buffaloes to produce the highest quality bufala mozzarella, yogurts, and gelato with their milk. After an unforgettable tastings, we’ll continue our scenic drive into the heart of Basilicata for two nights in the enigmatic city of Matera. Check in to your spectacular cave accommodations in this ancient, beautiful city and enjoy a candlelit dinner together. (B,L,D)
Day 7 - Matera
Today we’ll uncover the astonishing history of this city of caves. Take a walking tour of Matera as we visit the cave chapels with their Byzantine style frescoes, enjoy modern sculpture at the Musma Museum, and tour an underground city carved into the hillside. (B)
3 nights in a COUNTRYSIDE MASSERIA
A charming fortress set on a 16th century farmstead surrounded by 130 hectares of olive groves
Day 8 - Alberobello, Ostuni, Countryside Masseria
Leaving Matera, visit the picturesque town of Alberobello world famous for its conical trulli houses. After a wine tasting lunch, visit the white city of Ostuni with its opulent Duomo. Then, check in to our 16th century countryside masseria for three nights in this charming, relaxing location.
Day 9 - Bari, Polignano al Mare, Cooking Class
Stroll the centro storico and lungomare of colorful Bari before a visit to the Basilica of St. Nicholas with its haunting crypt. Then continue to the beautiful, seaside town of Polignano al Mare before returning to our maseria for a festive cooking class and dinner.
Day 10 - Lecce
Known as the Florence of the South, beautiful Lecce offers a visit to its oppulent Duomo and Roman Amphitheater. Return to our masseria for a final wine tasting and dinner.
Day 11 - Depart / Sicily Extension
Transfer to Bari for a return flight or continue with four luxury nights on the island of Sicily.
OPTIONAL POST TOUR EXTENSION
Conclude your trip with four nights on the southeastern shores of Sicily in the Baroque city of Siracuse. You’ll stay in the old town of Ortigia popular for its Greek temples, narrow medieval streets, churches, food markets, and mix of architectural styles that make for quintessential romantic walks. Our time in Sicily will focus on their world famous cuisine, unique regional wines, and soaking in the beauty of the architecture and seascape.
